Back-flashover at double-circuit 500 kV transmission tower by winter lightning

(C) Hokuriku Electric Power Co. 1995

This is the historic photo which proved that frequent multiple-line faults at 500 kV lines in winter in the coastal area of the Sea of Japan were due to back-flashovers caused by lightning. It was photographed by an automatic camera in February 1995. Today it is almost confirmed that this lightning was a high-current upward lightning launched from the top of the transmission tower.
