Superconducting Magnet System for the 1MW MHD power generator facility

A large superconducting magnet and a helium refrigerator-liquefier system for the 1MW MHD power generator facility were developed. The MHD project (1966-75) was one of the first MITI/AIST large-scale national R&D projects in Japan.

The weight of the magnet to be cooled by liquid helium was about 49ton, the required liquid helium was 2,700 l, and the evaporation losses of the liquid helium were about 60 to 80 l/h.

In 1973 a magnetization test for the system was successfully performed. November 1975 the MHD generator achieved 482kW generation in the final test.
