Dr. T. Iijima belonged to the Electronics Division of the Electro-technical Laboratory in 1957. At that time, the plan of newly developing the translation machine was conceived in this Division. He was participating as one member of this plan. Afterwards, the necessity of the automatic input of textual information to the translation machine is noticed. As a result, he newly began the plan to develop the optical character reader. In this plan he advocated the identification principle of the character using three valued logical algebra. This photograph is an optical character reader succeeded in development for the first time in our country in 1958.
