  As the first concert hall in Japan adopting the vineyard form , “Suntory Hall” was opened in Akasaka in Tokyo’s Minato Ward in October 1986 exclusively for staging performance of classical music. The main concept of the concert hall was “unifying players and audience as one of a more enjoyable musical experience”. So, a reduced scale-modeled hall of 1/10 was built to confirm lighting and sound effects. Several experiments and simulation tests were carried out by using it over the last two years or so. As a result, 10 custom-made chandeliers were adopted as light sources for the base light. As regards the lighting scheme, advanced design and brightness appearance of chandeliers, luminance distribution in the entire hall, and so on were investigated.

  The interior lighting of the hall is composed of “chandeliers for stage base light ” and “lighting for stage area”. Average stage illuminance lit by chandeliers is approximately 1400 lux. Each chandelier contains nine 500 watt tungsten-halogen lamps with infrared reflective film and nine dichroic mirror reflectors and so on, which are significantly valuable to decrease the heat to players and bad effect for their musical instruments for cutting infrared rays by 85% from the lamp radiation.

  In seating area, an indirect lighting system like a cornice lighting and so on was mainly designed to provide optimum lighting quality. In particular, for cornice lighting, 150 Watt tungsten-halogen lamps similar to those used for the stage base light are utilized, and deterioration of wooden wall materials due to temperature increase is avoided.

  The lighting control equipments for controlling the light output of all the lighting fixtures in the hall apply a “simultaneous duplex operation system in order to ensure high reliability. Moreover, by adopting optical-fiber cable for the control signal systems of the lighting-operation panel in the modulated-light room and the dimmer panel in the dimmer-unit room, noise reduction is achieved.

  In winning plaudits from performing musicians, audiences, and critics and creating a lighting environment that matches up to its excellent acoustic properties, Suntory Hall has been highly evaluated since its opening. Paying tribute to this achievement, the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (IEIJ) awarded Shoichi Sano (Yasui Architects & Engineers, Inc.), Tadataka Kikuchi (Kajima Corporation), Hiroshi Yoshida (Toshiba Electric Equipment Corporation), and six others the “Lighting Technology Award” in 1986.
