  The development of semiconductor integrated circuit technology has introduced the Si photodiode array target to the field of TV pickup tube as bombardment by high-speed electrons is used and this shows a remarkable current amplification effect giving a gain of several thousands. Using this amplification effect, a silicon electron-multiplication (SEM) type camera tube has been realized which has a marked capability for use at low light-levels.

  In recognition of this work, Shoichi Miyashiro received a Niwa Takayanagi (Toshiba Co.) Achievement Award from ITE in 1975.
